This was one of the most challenging documentaries I’ve edited from a tone perspective. The story is about how Joe Milligan, a POW during the Vietnam War, sent a coded language to his gal, “Skippy PB.” The challenge was telling this story about finding hope in the darkest times in a way that didn’t ignore the brutality of what Joe experienced but also didn’t linger on that darkness instead of the hope he felt.
